What Is CBD?

Everyone knows what CBD is right?....not quite. There is still a lot of confusion around the subject - so here is some information :)

CBD comes from Hemp (which is actually different to Marijuana).

Both hemp and marijuana do come from the same plant species – Cannabis sativa – but vary in THC composition. THC, otherwise known as tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most infamous cannabinoid due to its high-inducing properties. CBD on the other hand does not get you high. 


Hemp is specifically bred to have lower THC concentrations. Conversely, marijuana is grown to have high THC content. Only hemp-derived CBD oil is federally legal in the US because it is extracted from industrial hemp containing less than 0.3 percent THC. In Hong Kong in accordance with the law all CBD should have 0% THC.

But what is CBD exactly? Being a natural compound of the plant, it can comprise up to 40 percent of hemp. Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating, which means it will not get you high. CBD is often regarded as the single most crucial cannabinoid ever discovered. With on-going research, the list of uses continues to grow, giving more and more hope to those looking to enhance their overall quality of life.

Is CBD Oil the same as Hemp seed oil?

Short answer - no

Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of hemp plants. 

CBD oil makers extract CBD from the leaves, stems, flowers, and stalks of matured hemp plants. Many people sell hemp oil telling people it's CBD oil. They are different. 

 

What are the different ways to take CBD?

There are 3 main ways to take CBD. Based on your needs and preferences, you can apply CBD through different methods such as using oils, eating gummies, or using creams. Your choice of administration can affect how CBD works with your body.

What does CBD do?

CBD works by stimulating the endocannabinoid system – a biological structure common in all vertebrates. This system helps maintain homeostasis, the human body’s natural balance of physical and chemical systems when responding to various physiological conditions. 

For example, if an outside force, such as excess stress, reasons for bad sleep,  or pain from an injury throws off your body’s homeostasis, your ECS kicks in to help your body return to its ideal operation.

Within the endocannabinoid system, CBD molecules attach to CB2 cannabinoid receptors that are connected to the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The PNS includes various organs and systems, such as the immune system, muscles, skin, and limbs.

How is CBD absorbed?

It is absorbed depending on how you take it - Under the tongue (oils), through the digestive tract (gummies), or through the skin (topicals). Your body’s absorption of CBD from the application area into the bloodstream is known as its bioavailability – maximizing bioavailability means allowing more CBD to be readily available for bodily use. Taking CBD through various means changes its bioavailability; however, choosing the best method of use for your needs will help ensure that you’ll receive the most support from properly sourced CBD.

Is CBD right for me? Are there people who shouldn't take it?

If you are unsure please talk to your family doctor before taking CBD. Generally due to little research in these areas, pregnant women or women breastfeeding should not take it - but the best thing to do is to discuss it with your doctor. He or she can offer other, pregnancy-safe ways to improve your symptoms, and advise you of all the potential risks and side effects of CBD oil — both for you and the baby. 

Parents who wish to administer CBD to their children (under 18) should do so under the advisement of a physician.

Is CBD use common?

Ancient civilizations have used various strains of cannabis throughout centuries for their wealth of wellness properties. But due to dramatic shifts in legislation and other influences such as determining what is CBD versus THC, cannabinoids became widely unaccepted as an alternative application.

However, as the health and science communities continue to further recognize and accept the properties of different cannabinoids, the prohibitions that once restricted and limited the use of CBD have evolved into protections and freedoms of what is CBD for anyone looking for safe and effective alternatives.
